At the beginning of the fall semester, we had a lesson with Ms. Chen about natural farming. This year our project is going to focus on natural farming. Therefore it is really important for us to first understand the basic concept of natural farming. We went over the methods of natural farming. We also looked at the types of organic certifications that can be seen in Taiwan. Now I know that I should look for vegetable with double certifications when I am shopping for food. Besides that Ms. Chen also gave a presentation on Grass Hope Foundation. One of the lesson I learnt from Ms. Chen is to put yourself into other shoes. Ms. Chen said that she encountered a lot of challenges when trying to persuade the farmers in her community not to use chemicals. But it is only when she put herself into the old farmers’ shoes that she finally understood why they were using pesticide. These old farmers used pesticide because they have no one to help them farm. Therefore, Ms. Chen and some of the members from the Grass Hope Foundation farmed with the farmers. As time pass, the farmers gradually reduced the usage of pesticide. By putting herself into other’s shoes Ms. Chen is able to reach her goal.

Today's visit to Ms. Chen is very special. From the very beginning, Ms. Chen asked us to inquire about the question of "organic farming". Initially, I did not understand about organic farming. I thought that if I cultivated crops myself, I could call it "organic." I did not expect that organic produce would need to undergo double certification and three inspection procedures. Requires CAS and certification of the various units, and were tested in : soil, water, crops. Of these, the MOA does not recognize: soilless cultivation, water root crops.
MOA's main purpose is to respect soil and perform natural farming practices, we as Earth’s children believe that it’s able to cultivate the safest and most natural crops if each farmer tried. That is why we tried our best to learn and introduce to other people about the Grass Hope Taiwan Foundation, which has helped many farmers to improve their environment already. We will do our best together with Grass Hope Foundation to help and ensure the sustainability of our land by practicing organic farming to preserve our beautiful mother nature.

In our everyday lives, such as in Biology class or in the supermarket, “organic agriculture” can be seen quite often. However, I never really understood what these two words mean, nor did I know much about this area of farming. This year, I finally got the chance to learn more because of Earth’s children and Grass Hope Taiwan Foundation. After the class taught by Ms. Chen, I understood what “organic agriculture” is, qualifications for a farm to be considered “organic”, and the backstory behind Grass Hope Taiwan Foundation. From getting bothered by the smell of pesticides to working with farmers in the neighborhood to solve the problem together, the story of how this group originated deeply surprised me. After taking the class, I not only have more knowledge about “organic farming”, but also admire and respect Ms. Chen even more!

Today was our first time to visit Ms. Chen. Since I was a child, I had already caught a glimpse of “organic agriculture”. It’s because of my family background. My grandfather had established the first foundation of organic certification- MOA international. However, I never really understood the meaning of this two words. As a result, this year, I got a chance to gain more knowledge about organic agriculture, because I joined Earth’s children. We learnt aboutGrass Hope Taiwan foundation. After the meeting with Ms. Chen, I finally figured out few doubts in my mind such as how to identity “organic agriculture” and the benefit of fields. What’s more, we also understood the main purpose of Grass Hope Taiwan foundation. Not only did they respect the fields, but they also help many farmers improve their environment and economic status.
