Experiencing the Tea Ceremony – immersing in beauty
Throughout the history, the tea ceremony has always been a difficult skill to master. MOA Taiwan, the organization which origins from Japan, has dedicated great time and effort to advocate the art of the tea ceremony. The tea ceremony represents both the inner and spiritual experiences of drinking tea properly.

Mr. Yuzu taught us the art of the tea ceremony by guiding us through each step. He started by demonstrating the ceremonial preparation. Then, he presented the Japanese tea ceremony. He served each of us a cup of tea with traditional Japanese sweets, particularly soybean cake, to balance with the bitterness of the tea. After Mr. Yuzu’s demonstration, we paired up to serve tea to each other, practicing the tea ceremony. We felt that experiencing the spirit of serving and preparing were the main points of the tea ceremony. The heartwarming ceremonial preparation and presentation were not only about drinking tea, but was also about aesthetics. Preparing a cup of tea from one’s heart to serve the guests with every movement and gesture, all for just one gathering. |
After selecting the tea cup, we were very attentive to get a scoop of tea powder with both of our hands, and put it carefully and slowly in the cup. Pouring in hot water, taking the tea brush and to make the bubbles as we go along, means pouring all of one’s attention into the predefined movements. We were very engaged to make the best bowl of tea, and ready to serve it to one another, which was prepared by us with our hearts. While serving the tea to the other person, we felt it was a very sacred moment and we only wanted to other person to have the best experience. I believe this is the true meaning of the tea ceremony – focusing on the spiritual connection with another human being. |
