This is our second interview with Mr. Yoshinobu. Different from the first interview, Mr. Yoshinobu answers our question about MOA in a face to face interview. Mr. Yoshinobu is full of energy, and always answers and takes our question very seriously. We are really thankful for Ms. Chen Jia Chi and Mr. Yoshinobu help. We show our interview work in a main point form with quotations from transcript.
Q1:Could you please share a case that is most memorable in your career of promoting Natural Farming and Organic Diet?
A1: When I was young, I was very ill and often missed the class due to that reason. When my family joined MOA and changed our diet, my health started to get better. This was the motivation for me to start campaigning healthy diet and lifestyle. I have experienced many memorable experiences in my journey, now I find this campaign turn out to be my mission. There are many challenges for sure, but because of this goal and mission, I will still try my best to breakthrough it anyway.
Q2:How does the promotion of art activities such as Tea Ceremony and Flower Arranging help enhance the concept of Natural Farming and Organic Diet?
A2: MOA Taiwan has also been working for the same goal— “to bring joy and happiness into our lives” The objects might be different, but the ultimate goal is to make people’ healthy physically and spiritually. Thus, when we talk about tea ceremony Chanoyu, we also value the importance of organic agriculture. For example: The motcha powder used in MOA Tea Ceremony Chanoyu is an organic product from Japan, the smell of it is rich but not bitter. These two things are complement one another.
Q3:How does climate change impacts Taiwan’s agriculture?
A3: Not only in Taiwan, the whole world is trying to adapt what global warming brings. Taiwanese climate is generally hotter than Japan, so farming also needs adaptabilities. Warm climate has both good and down sides, the advantages is more times in harvest so the amount of agricultural products will increase. On the other hand, there are more insect pest, therefore it is harder to control and store agricultural products. In addition, Japan now because of global warming, the crops started to move north. And more Japanese farmers come to Taiwan to learn the skills of growing crops.
Q4:Do the government policies promotes or restricts the progression of natural farming?
A4:Government’s policy for organic agriculture helps the industry but it also set the boundary. Starting from 2009, government set up a rule for organic certification, and believing this will bring credibility. Normally people trust products which have double certification (both from central and local). But this is for traditional farmers, so they won’t be able to pass the examination easily.
Q5:What is the difference between promotion of natural farming in Taipei and in other cities?
We emphasize more on the concept of organic agriculture and products in Taipei. Taipei has a high rate of housing, the fields an farming space are comparatively small to other places, so promote organic farming is harder because of the high cost. People in Taipei also have a higher consuming rate, and the demand of organic products is influential. Most customers go to organic shops or market to buy the products, so it is more efficient to talk about concept rather than implementation.
