The steps of Japanese tea ceremony-Chanoyu
Preparing:
- Clean the utensils.
- Pour hot water into the pot.
- Put tea powder into the natsume.
- Fold the chakin properly.
- Place the utensils on the tray.
Making tea (host):
- Bring out the tray and sit near the guests.
- Get everything ready and bow to greet the guests.
- Use hot water to clean the utensils and also to warm up the chawan. At the same time, observe to find the most beautiful part of the chawan.
- Scoop up some tea powder into the chawan.
- Pour hot water into the chawan.
- Stir with the chasen.
- Place the tea in front of the guest. Let the most beautiful part of it face the guest.
Having dessert (guest):
- Each guest will be served with a dessert.
- Bow to the host to show gratitude.
- Use the kuromoji (a toothpick used to eat) on the dish when having dessert.
- After finishing the dessert, use kaishi (Japanese paper, placed in the guests’ pockets) to wipe the plate and the kuromoji clean.
- Set the used plate aside until the ceremony ends.
Drinking tea (guest):
- Bring the chawan closer, without rotating it.
- Bow to the host and other guests. Say, “I’m about to have the tea.”
- Put the chawan steadily on the left palm, and support it with the right hand.
- Rotate the chawan in order to avoid drinking with the most beautiful part of it.
- Finish the tea in exactly three drinks. Use your finger to wipe clean the part touched by the mouth.
- Place the chawan back in front of yourself.
- Thoroughly observe and admire the chawan.
- Return the chawan to the host.
Cleaning up:
- Wash the utensils.
- Dry up the utensils.
