Story Picture Book

Under the leadership of Professor Li Chien-Lang’s one-day tour of historic sites, we have a different appreciation of the maintenance of existing historic sites, and also feel that it is very important to establish the concept of historic site maintenance from an early age and attach importance to the friendly environment, so we chose to use picture books related to historic sites and design picture book story guide promotion activities to bring into primary and secondary school classes to emphasize the importance of protecting the environment in which we live, through the cute and childlike illustrations in our picture book, The Busy Red Fort, the wonderful and long history of Tamsui Fort San Domingo is illustrated. We will also bring in the content of the field visit led by Professor Li Chien-Lang to Fort San Domingo in Tamsui; through the real plot taken from the history, children can concentrate on the evolution of this red castle, from military fortresses, military food warehouses, consular residences, to the historic site as it is now. It also invests more imagination in historic sites and stimulates the awareness of their preservation.

The theme of the 2023 Internet Web Expo is “Friendliness and Unity.” To this end, the Historic Site Detective Team explores how people improve their surroundings and the environment, and examines how Taiwanese education can undergo bottom-up changes so that more efforts can be invested in the maintenance of historic sites in order to strike a balance between modern development and the maintenance of historic sites. “Why don’t you demolish it and build a new skyscraper? Why was it preserved and not demolished? Who is its owner?” The above questions keep popping up, and they won’t stop popping up in the future. So we are thinking about how to integrate this answer into the game, so as to convey to children how closely related historic sites and our daily lives are, and guide the children to understand the importance of maintaining historic sites through the book The Busy Red Fort.

Ancient Miracles Fort San Domingo is
a wonderful story

The castle is a very attractive building for children, because there are always all kinds of beautiful castles in fairy tales, and they must also want to know that Tamsui also has an ancient castle dubbed the “Red Hair City” by locals, but there are no princes and princesses in it. Instead, it was used as the headquarters to rule the local people by foreign invaders… Which outsiders were fighting each other for this castle? Why is it called the “Red Hair City” instead of the “Black Hair” or “White Hair City”? During storytelling, we asked the children to use their imagination and guess! Then we introduced the content of the picture book by projection, and many children suddenly got the right answers after listening to the story, and we also used this to convey the story of the historic site.

Inspire children to think
through the Q&A design
The introductory reading promotes the importance of hisstoric site maintenance.

We chose the medium of picture book, and the popularity and historic value of historic site is the focus of our choice, since we hope to arouse the curiosity of children through the exquisite illustrations in the book, and then they can understand the origin and interesting details of historic sites. I believe that the next time they and their parents visit any historic site, they can also explain what they have learned to the adults. This is the purpose we want to achieve, so that everyone will love historic sites and protect them because of understanding. We assigned three people in a group to each class to explain and tell stories. Seeing every child enthusiastically raising their hand to answer questions, I realized I was also their age seven years ago, and now as a senior student, I deeply feel the sense of responsibility in my heart, which made me feel that I was doing something very meaningful!
