Wilderness Promotion Afterthoughts
The Society of Wilderness (SOW) is a 25-year-old ecological conservation association from Taiwan promoting activities for older aged elementary children. We created slides introducing the SOW and added exciting videos from events. During the in-class promotion events, my teammates and I found out that students understand the need to protect our one and only planet, but few of them have participated in activities related to the protection of it. We chose the outdoor events to show in our videos in order to draw the attention of other students. The students saw in the video how we and other team members trekked across the island through the mountain and into the sea, and were able to relate and understand the mission of the WPS, and we were then able to promote the agendas the SOW is currently working on.
Due to the limited promotion time, we ask that everyone scan the QR code to access our cloud account to better gain an understanding of SOW. The internet has no limits and allows for everyone to watch our video on their own time. Students were touched when they saw how the volunteers took their spare time out of their busy lives to head into the wetlands, the mountains, and the ocean. Love needs no embellishment, and as long as we care about the earth, each and every one of us can all be a part of the SOW.
My teammates and I were moved when we saw the responses from the other students pouring in through Google Forms. However, our teammates and I also found out that environmental protection and ecological conservation are still very foreign concepts to the elementary school students, and they are not very clear about the extent of global environmental pollution and ecological destruction. Through our promotion they were able to become aware of the current global crisis and were able to get to know SOW, and we realized that each person's small step can amount to a giant step for mankind. I am happy about the promotion's success and the fact that we were able to spread the seeds of love.
