Illustrated Storybooks
Although the SOW is already the largest environmental group in Taiwan, most people are still not clear about the work and mission of it. It is the Wilderness Crossing members' hope that more people will become aware of its existence, and at the same time promote the spirit of volunteerism in SOW, getting more people to join its ranks. We thought we could start at our school, focusing on the lower grade students, through simple ways to show them the suffrage of Mother Nature. We hope to sow the seeds of environmental protectionism and hope these kids will spread the same idea at home with their parents and further influence other families.
We discussed how to promote the concept of environmental protection to the younger students, and we all agreed that environmental picture books are the most vivid and interesting way to attract the children's attention through stories and pictures. We thought about choosing a picture book to promote to each class, but the mission of Wilderness covers a wide range of topics, including: mountains, forests, oceans, environmental education, etc. It is difficult to have a picture book that can encompass everything. We finally settled on a number of different books, and split ourselves into groups of two to share the storybook to different classes. Having different books to share could stimulate different interests and spark conversations about them. We first coordinated with the teachers of each lower grade class to discuss, make presentations, and rehearse with our group partners after school, hoping to get the attention of the younger students during the presentations. In order to make them listen carefully, we also designed questions and prepared some small gifts to give to the students who got the right answers.
For 25 years, the SOW volunteers have worked hard on various environmental issues and their spirit has touched us deeply. Nature nurtures many lives and provides the resources we need, so we all have a responsibility to protect the environment. The 5 storybooks chosen this time all have different merits. For example, "The Magical Journey of a Sea Turtle Egg", which advocates for a plastic-free ocean, explores the wonders of the ocean through the growth of a sea turtle and describes the threat to the survival of sea turtles brought about by marine litter. The story "A Fantastic Flight in Taipei", is about a young girl's daily commute in the city, which shows the pollution brought by the city and the possibility of a harmonious coexistence between the city and nature can be seen between reality and imagination. The sharing of these different books also allowed the members of the Wilderness Crossing team to gain a better understanding of the various issues.
