Place:Jen-Chi Senior Citizens’ Rest Home Address: No.153, Sec. 2, Zhongzheng E. Rd., Tamsui Dist., New Taipei City 251, Taiwan (R.O.C.) TEL:+886-2-2809-5600 Attendants:Wen-wei Lu、Wen-chi Lu、Yi-chieh Chen、Yi-yen Chen、I-wei Ho、Yueh-tzu Lee、Bing-yan Ho、Hung-chang Lo On this beautiful and sunny morning, we visited the Jen-Chi Senior Citizens’ Rest Home in Tamsui, New Taipei City. The rest home is housed by elders over the age of 65. We introduced the Hakka culture to the elders through volunteering opportunity, and invited the elders to taste the Hakka cuisine –擂茶 Lei Cha (Grinded Tea)
Introduction of Lei Cha
The Hakka people have developed a habit to endure hardship due to long-term migration history. Although they don’t pay particular attention to eating, the cuisine is very unique. The word "擂" has the meaning of grinding and pounding. It is considered to have the effect of health care. The material not only has high nutritional value, but also helps digestion and absorption, suitable for elders to drink.
How to eat Lei Cha1.As Refreshment: It can be eaten with rice cake for unique flavor.
2.As Main Course: It can be stir fried with some green vegetables such as lettuce and broccoli. Dried beans, peanuts, and dried radishes, etc. can be used as side dishes. Through this volunteer opportunity, I have seen that there are still many people in the society who deserve our attention and support, and I have also realized how lucky I am. The volunteer activity should be catered to the needs of those on the receiving end. In order to make the activity more meaningful, we should get to know their personality traits, and provide assistance to their needs.
Description of the Video: Promoting Event at the Jen Chi nursing home
The hakka treasure their own historical legacy and there are many fascinating historic landmarks in hakka town, we want to provide a chance for the elderlies in the nursing home to understand the Hakka people’s high regard of paying tribute to ancestors, and have a taste of the traditional Hakka beverage: Lei Cha.
Students put the tea, peanuts, sesames and other ingredients into the special made mortar, and grounds the ingredients into powder by a pestle, while adding hot water into the mortar in the whole process. After a while the delicious and nutritious pulverized tea were ready to serve. Our team was in charge of the whole process of the event, from making of the posters, gathering the necessary tools to actually preparing the Lei Cha. And judging by the smiles on the elderlies faces we think we had a success promotion. Address: No.153, Sec. 2, Zhongzheng E. Rd., Tamsui Dist., New Taipei City 251, Taiwan (R.O.C.)

Publication“Before becoming the Guide Office for the Ancestral Shrine Museum of Xinpu, this old building was the dormitory for Xinpu Primary School’s principal. It is located next to the elementary school. It is the only Japanese-style building in Xinpu Town. It was built over one hundred year ago in the 28th year of Guangxu Emperor of Qing Dynasty (1902). It was used as the principal’s residence and not opened to the public until 2012, when it underwent a renovation. From the mottled lines of wooden buildings, the traces of time can be easily seen. After the renovation, the classic and simple features are preserved. The surrounding greenery sets off a Japanese style elegancy!
The building of the guide office itself is in the form of a raised floor, and the outer wall is made of wood-structured panels. From the inside, you can clearly see the structure and construction method of the entire Japanese-style architecture. Under the transparent glass floor of one special room in the building, there is a model of streets and buildings of Xinpu Town. It is quite interesting! We sat on the tatami and looked at the ancient trees outside the window, peace and quiet. Glimpses of the past 100 years renders in the quietness. The government has redesigned the Japanese-style principal's dormitory to become a guide office, which is also the entrance to the Ancestral Halls in the area. The cultural and historical materials and tourist information in the museum can give visitors a glimpse of Xinpu’s history. It is a good starting point for further understanding of the Hakka culture. Let us start from here and explore the beautiful culture of Xinpu’s golden years!” |
