Project Overview

1.Community Description:
Since the 14th century, Chinese people had settled in Taiwan and brought its own culture. Due to foreign invasion, Taiwanese gradually developed their own methods of self-defense, and then evolved into local martial arts. Later, many martial arts schools in the north and south of China also integrated with the original martial arts in Taiwan. Martial arts was originally called the national art when the KMT came to Taiwan, and it is still used today.

2.Project Summary:
Martial arts was the earliest tactics for people in China to protect themselves. After years of evolution, they gradually formed into the present martial arts. For this competition, we interviewed students, teachers, and parents in the school, and the judges of the Taipei Martial Arts Competition, in order to learn about the popularity of Taiwanese martial arts. Furthermore, we create web pages to introduce the history and culture of martial arts to the world through Internet.

3.CyberFair Theme:
This year’s theme is "Envision & Unite". We have great expectations for people to learn more about martial arts, and we encouraged our school to have us learn martial arts in PE class or hold martial arts competitions. Furthermore, we hope people can learn about different facets of the martial arts culture by participating in all sorts of exchange events. For example, our school held a cultural exchange event where students mingled with students from another school in Xichuan, talking about their experiences with martial arts.

4.Our Computer and Internet Access:
We have two computer classrooms with a total of 100 desktop computers and two optical fiber networks at school. We usually handle most of the work using lunch break, study time at night and holidays. After class time, members connect ADSL broadband Internet access at home, so we can use the same email, Facebook, Line, Google Drive, and other social media to continue researching.

5.Problems We Had to Overcome:
Since we had a lot of homework and many of us had cram school sessions after school, there was a problematic period when nobody was actively contributing to the project. Eventually we had to hold a team meeting, after which we reached a consensus that everybody had to coordinate their schedules and start getting work done together. We decided to use nighttime study hall and lunch break to complete this project, using the computer classroom to design the webpage. This in turn resulted in us being exhausted in the afternoon classes, so it was challenging finding a balance between schoolwork and this project.
We also ran into problems with our choice of topic: “Martial arts” alone was too broad of a topic, and in the beginning we were confused about what to focus on. Later on we chose to focus on the Taiwanese martial arts environment in particular, and that narrowed down our topic quite a bit.

6.Our Project Soundbite:
Chinese martial arts truly is a form of art unique to the Chinese culture, and we would like for the world to learn more about how Taiwan combined its culture with the beauty of Chinese martial arts.

7.How did your activities and research for this International Schools CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

Learning areas Description
Literature

1. Sorting through walls of information on the internet is a testament to our ability to skim through large amounts of text while making note of important pieces of information at the same time.
2.Creating the information on our web page enhances our ability to express ideas in words as well as our ability to translate Chinese into English.

Social studies Discussing the influence of martial arts on Taiwanese history, literature and cinema has trained our critical thinking skills; linking historical cause to effect has proven beneficial to our deductive abilities.
IT education Learning how to edit photos and to create web pages has taught us the value of technology in the modern world.
Arts and humanities

1. Taking time to view martial arts performances has served to foster our ability to appreciate the arts.
2.Learning martial arts in PE at school has given us actual experience in martial arts.
3. Handling the layout and aesthetics of the webpage has taught us how to design a readable, easily navigable and artistically pleasing website.

Integrative activities

1.Making preparations for interviews has taught us a great deal of social etiquette.
Throughout this project we have learned the importance of time management as well as how to properly cooperate with team members.
2.By presenting our project to our classmates we have learned the basics of public speaking and presentation making.
