Learning by Spectating

Chinese martial arts has been part of our school's PE curriculum for a long time; starting from elementary school children are taught basic martial arts knowledge as well as novice-level routines.
In order to encourage students to practice martial arts on their own, our school started holding martial arts competitions a few years ago. All six-graders are required to participate in this inter-class competition, which is based on novice-level routines and judged according to how orderly, correctly, strongly, and energetically the routines are executed. Usually students are enthusiastic about practicing on their own for the honor of their class.
We spectated one of these martial arts competitions. There were eight classes and about 280 students in total, and every single one of them was giving it their all on stage. There were two students standing in front of everyone; these were members of the school's martial arts team who had plenty of competitive experience, so they led the rest of their class.
From what we know, in past competitions there were classes which went out of the way to rent out special martial arts clothes to boost their on-stage energy and fully demonstrate the Chinese culture.
The school' s martial arts team includes students in both primary and secondary stages of schooling. Other than representing the school at local or national martial arts competitions, our team also performs at major school events, such as the school anniversary and sports day. We were able to watch a few of these live performances.
