Coach - Coach Wang, Fuhsing Martial Arts Team Coach

1.Why did you choose to practice martial arts?
When I was little I loved to watch Hong Kong martial arts movies, especially when they starred Bruce Lee or Jet Li — one of my favorite ones was Shaolin Temple, which had Jet Li in it. And it just so happened that my father knew a martial arts coach, so I started practicing at his training hall. I've been practicing martial arts ever since.
2.What is the most touching moment you've had teaching martial arts?
Sometimes students sacrifice a lot of their time to practice martial arts. Once there was a student who came straight to practice after his graduation trip — he didn't even know his moves! Often times students call off or delay other plans just to practice martial arts, and to me there is nothing more touching than their drive to learn.
3.What brought you to Fuhsing to teach martial arts?
It just so happened that the wife of my college classmate's teacher had a relative who was learning martial arts at Fuhsing, so I applied to Fuhsing as a martial arts coach.
4.Have you had any frustrating experiences teaching martial arts?
There was one time when a student got hurt badly when he was practicing a difficult stunt. It was frustrating because it told me I wasn't careful enough as a coach during practice.
5.What are your hopes for Fuhsing's martial arts team?
I hope every student on the team can enjoy practicing martial arts and spread this traditional culture. By practicing martial arts I hope they can learn more about the Taiwanese culture and combine martial arts with something else in the future.
6.What kind of person is cut out for learning martial arts?
As long as you’re passionate about it and you're willing to commit, anyone can learn martial arts. But perseverance really is important, because the initial process of learning martial arts can be pretty boring.
7.When do you think is best for a child to start learning martial arts?
There are weapons and routines for every age level, but every person's gotta learn the basics no matter their age level. Usually I would recommend starting early; kids learn a lot faster, and this reflects on their performance during practice. But no matter what age level, anybody can learn martial arts.
8.What type of martial arts do Fuhsing students learn?
Currently the school's curriculum is based on the series of basic martial arts routines developed by the Ministry of Education. After that we slowly introduce other routines and weapons.
