Changquan

1.Introduction:
Also known as Taizu Changquan, Changquan (lit. Long Fist) is a family of martial arts styles founded by Zhao Kuangyin, first emperor of the Song dynasty, as training for soldiers. A defining characteristic of Changquan is large, extended movements across a wide range. Bold and elegant at the same time with its stretched-out stances, flexible movements, and clear rhythm, Changquan demonstrates the true meaning of the Chinese saying "one inch longer, one inch stronger".

2.Specialties:
(1) Large, extended movements, long striking distance.
Changquan is a Northern family of martial arts, so its biggest specialty is large, extended movements and long-range attacks. A certain flexibility and muscle density is required in order to really demonstrate the "stretched-out" feeling that is unique to Changquan, so many other schools of martial arts adopt Changquan routines for entry-level training.

(2)Strict, solid training.
Known as the basis of all martial arts, zhan zhuang (lit. standing like a post) is an important stance in Changquan that must be mastered before attempting any dynamic moves.

(3)Swift, flowing movements.
Chinese martial arts is all about the coordination between hand, eye, body, method, and step — Changquan is particularly demanding in this regard. To perfect the seamless flow and speed characteristic of Changquan, one must know how to combine the sensations of hand, eye, body, method, and step.
