To celebrate its 60th anniversary, the National Museum of History introduced a series of brilliant activities. One of them is "Painting Modern - Chen Chin's Special Exhibition" which combines exhibition, collection and promotion of education. The exhibition includes a representative of the beauty of the screen, as well as landscape and flowers, a total of 93 different themes. Among them, "Make-up", which was selected as the spring Imperial's exhibition in Japan in 1936, included a total of more than 30 pieces which were recently arranged by family members and exhibited for the first time.
Mrs. Chen Chin (1907-1998) The first woman painter in Taiwan during the Japanese occupation period. She was born in Niubu, Hsinchu County. While studying in the third female high school in Taipei, she received the appreciation of ancient patriotism as a Japanese painter in the art teacher's school.Supporting from her father, she studied fine arts at the Tokyo Women's Fine Arts School in Japan in 1925. 1927, for the first Taiwan Exhibition, Mrs. Chen Chins’ three paintings: "Pose", "Poppy Flower" and "morning" was selected. After that, her paintings were selected each year by Taiwan exhibitions and house exhibitions.
Mrs. Chen Chin's positive learning and outstanding achievements are regarded as representative of the new women in Japanese colonial period. The women depicted in her works have gentle, soft temperament. This female image, which scholars believe represents not only Chen Chin, herself but also the typical Taiwanese woman during the Japanese occupation period.
The women in Mrs. Chen Chin’s paintings, has a modern appearance, with the then popular clothing, curly short hair, high heels and various accessories, was the focus of the competition between the artists. The modern women in Mrs. Chen Chin's paintings combine the concept of western health and ancient oriental into the images of the high-profile women in Taiwan.
Mrs. Chen Chin uses Japanese beauty painting, Western modern painting, elegant and gorgeous classical Chinese decoration and other different elements to create her unique beauty image. After the war, Mrs. Chen Chin began to serve as a member of the examination committee of Provincial Exhibition of Chinese Paintings. Later, her focus of life gradually shifted to the family, so the theme of her paintings was also changed into love, family and flowers.

During the Japanese occupation period, the first female painter in Taiwan, Mrs. Chen Chin (1907-1998), was famous for her gentle and delicate style. Her feminine temperament and modern style in her works were considered typical of "modern women" at that time. The National Museum of History is hosting the Chen Chin exhibition "Painting and Modernization," including more than 30 paintings such as the selected in the Imperial exhibition in 1936, which are all for the first time exhibited.
Mrs. Chen Chin was born in Hsinchu's gentry’s family and studied in Japan with his father's support. In 1934, Chen Chin’s painting “Ensemble” was selected by the 15th Imperial Art Exhibition (Emperor Exhibition). She was the first Taiwanese female artist who got in the Imperial Exhibition. Chen Chin was afraid of the flood drowning the painting, so especially carried it to the hotel near to protect it. Due to large size of the painting, exhibit it is not easy. In the past, the public could only see the copies from the pictures and publications. This time the painting was carried out by the crane hanging the painting from the wall.
Chen Chin was good at oriental gouache painting. She once said: "gouache is a troublesome hassle." It takes a lot of time and patience to paint well, so it is very engaging. In addition, the "Chen Chin Art and Culture Award" was set up with the prize of the Culture Award of the Executive Yuan and personal donation to encourage the creation of gouache painting.

The entries include "The Mountain of the Fortress" and the "City of Souls." Third place student Tsai Dong Yun is currently studying in National Taiwan University of the Arts. His entries include "Pegasus" and "Millennium Love"; his works show rich fantasy and decoration. National Museum of History will be holding the award ceremony at December 4 Hall celebration.
