This time we tried to paint Eastern Gouache on the fan. The teacher showed us from cooking glue by ourselves first, to mixing paints, and painting. We felt that painting Eastern Gouache is a lot of trouble, spending lots of time and hard! While cooking the glue, we’ll have to put a piece of glue in the water, then use double boiling to wait the glue melt to use. It sounds easy, but the truth is when we were melting it, we used chopsticks kept stirring, however, the glue is easy to stick on the chopsticks and we can’t get it off. After one hour, the glue wasn’t ready yet, so the teacher gave the glue she had prepared to use …… thus it can be seen how difficult Eastern Gouache is, this not like watercolor, pick up the painting brush then we can paint immediately! However the most difficult is waiting for us, which is painting. First, we have to add the pigment powder into the glue (during the process we used our fingers to stir it in case wasn’t mixed well) then we used Chinese writing brush to pick up the paint. During painting, we had to do layers of layers of pigment overlay, it’s really complicated. Nevertheless, when we saw our paintings, we felt all of our previous efforts are worthwhile. This is probably why Mrs. Chen Chin loved Eastern Gouache so much.

Expensive materials mixed with water and glue, carefully colored layers of layers on the fan, from light to dark, from white to colorful, this was the paintings that we nearly spent two hours, this was also our first time experiencing the famous style of painting during Japanese occupation period- Eastern Gouache. It was first originated from China, then from China to Japan, after that from Japan to Taiwan. In fact, Eastern Gouache is just like oil painting, not easy to fade, and can save for a long time. In addition to the famous of Eastern Gouache paintings, it was also famous for the expensive materials! The teacher told us, Eastern Gouache is mostly made of glue, mixed with natural minerals, and adding water. The reason that the materials are expensive is because of the natural minerals, especially the red and blue minerals due to their rareness, and of course the colors and sizes are related to the price. I learned being an artist is not easy, you have to have extraordinary painting skills, and also have the resources to buy materials, but to understand the right color and size for the theme of the painting, in order to do a good work. The teacher introduced the famous people of painting Eastern Gouache, such as the father of Eastern Gouache Mr. Lin Zhi Du and ”Three Youths of Taiwan Art Exhibition” etc.. We also experienced painting the Eastern Gouache, first we drew the pictures we want on the fan, and then we started painting. While coloring, I found the differences between Eastern Gouache and other kinds of coloring materials, you have to paint layers of it and wait until the previous layer is dried. Thus it can be seen the painters spent a lot of time painting it! Nowadays, art are mostly influenced by the Western culture, and Eastern Gouache’s materials are expensive, so less and less people want to create paintings of Eastern Gouache. Most of the works of the modern famous painters are all painted by Western skills or materials. After learning Eastern Gouache, I sincerely hope the history of it can be inherited, and encourage more people to learn about it. After the introduction, I had a better understanding of Eastern Gouache, I really enjoy the paintings of it, and encourage everyone to create these kinds of paintings, let Eastern Gouache don’t disappear in the future!

This is the first time I concentrated in painting, or that, this beautiful way of painting, let me feel like a baby got a new toy, sprinkle my curiosity on the silk fan.
Into the painting studio, I felt a little bit nervous, to me a person who is not talented at painting, to quietly paint makes me somehow uncomfortable. However, since the teacher start the course, I saw various kinds of painting tools, such as deer glue (the main material of gouache), rock painting (crushed natural minerals pigment), laminar (white paints), different types of brush, and even gold foil. This desktop is almost a colorful piece of work. In the process of introducing, I often think of Mrs. Chen Chin, those materials that they didn’t have before, what kinds of materials did she use instead of? And so many supplies, how did she choose or control? I cannot help but start admiring Mrs. Chen Chin. Wait until the introduction is completed, it began our painting time. The teacher gave us the copy paper, can be used for helping the beginners. From toning glue, sieve powder then brush strokes. At this point I have been thinking of which paints should I use. From the beginning, I chose the blue color as the frame of the rose, which is magical and unexpected. Then, I pick up the black paint, and even accidentally used too much glitter to paint my rose. Depression with sparkling gold is my work features! In fact, when we were sketching the picture, the teacher told us:” actually, gouache is not as easy as painting one layer, you have to paint continuously, put on glue layer by layer to create a vivid painting. The teacher also showed us her works. It was her self-portrait, I like the blush most. The middle part is ruddy; the blush around is like the morning sun, the clouds around me, that I have never seen in other paintings.
During painting, it seems that I stepped closer to Mrs. Chen Chin. I felt the emotional indulgence of painting, let our ideas lead us to concentrate on paintings, enjoy the happy and excited moment. Finally I understand that many important moments of Mrs. Chen Chin, she wanted to use painting to record it, perhaps Mrs. Chen Chin was immersed in the painting, so that life and she had the best blending due to Eastern Gouache!

This is the first time I get in touch with Eastern Gouache. I was originally a stranger to it, I’d never heard of this kind of art media before, so I came to the art classroom with an expectant heart to welcome the class. I was surprised by all kinds of materials, I didn’t expect it would need so many materials. After the introduction by the teacher, we learned the function, the use of methods, and the preservation method of various materials one by one. This made me understood that in the beautiful gouache paintings need a large number of different materials. Then it was our turn to practice using gouache to paint, we used different flower as models for copying to prevent self-esteem from traumatizing. In the process of painting, I found out it was so difficult and not like those watercolors we use are easy to control. Painting requires great patience to finish the work, and paints needed to be stacked one above one, so it is requires a lot of labor. This is a very interesting experience; I hope we can have the chance to experience it again.

After this gouache painting experience, I realized making gouache paintings is a very laborious task. Compared with watercolors, the process of painting Eastern Gouache is more complicated. The materials needed to be prepared are also very diversified, and some materials are quite expensive. However, this caused the beauty and elegant of gouache paintings, and the preservation is even better than watercolor paintings. I was surprised when the teacher was introducing the materials, so that is how the diversified materials can make artists paint good paintings. This time when we were painting the fan pattern, there was a printed pattern for us to do the outline of the frame, then coloring the picture by using gouache. Just so, let me feel the difficulty of painting gouache. In addition to the laborious preparation, and my art talent is not very good, so my painting was far less than Mrs. Chen Chin’s work. There are so many famous paintings of Mrs. Chen Chin; she must have spent a lot of time and effort on it. In order to perfectly present the time and effort of each piece of work cannot be underestimated.

This is the first time I come in contact with gouache paintings. I did not even know the existence of gouache and how to paint them. As a result of participating the webpage competition, I had the opportunity to experience the traditional art that has lasted for thousand of years. Before the actual experience, we had done quite a lot of information collection, so we knew more about gouache, and I am in charge of this part, therefore I did some preparation hoping to give the teacher a good impression. At there, the teacher’s explain answered our problems which we did not understand before. The point is the teacher’s introduction of materials let us knew something that the Internet did not show, she provided help for our project. At the same time, the teacher also personally demonstrated how to paint with gouache and showed the previous paintings. I felt grateful for the painter’s patience and attentiveness. During our actual painting, even though I do not have much art talent, I still tried my best; the teacher encouraged us that for beginners it is hard to avoid meeting with setbacks. When I finally finished, I looked at my own work; I can’t help myself full of satisfaction!
