Taiwan Exhibition

The Taiwan Fine Arts Exhibition, also called as Taiwan Exhibition and Bay Exhibition for short, is Taiwan's first large art exhibition. The time was held from 1927 to 1936 for a total of 10 times. The organizer was the external legal entity of the Taiwan Provincial Government’s Bureau of Culture and Education during the reign of Japan. It was suspended in 1937 due to the Marco Polo Bridge Incident. It was held in 1938 by the Government House of Taiwan (the Republic of China). At that time, the government wants to intervene in art exhibition activities and has political implications. The Taiwanese exhibition is sponsored by the Taiwan Education Association, and is against the colonial authorities. In terms of the exhibition, the exhibition is an educational method, that is, a method of “assimilation.” Through the holding of art exhibitions, the promotion of Japanese tastes and the Japanese aesthetic concept is something Taiwanese people can “train” into their home countries. The people are also an important way to promote the colonial achievements to the international community.

Government Exhibition

The Art Exhibition of the Government House of Taiwan, also called as the government exhibition for short, was transformed from the Taiwan Exhibition. From 1938 to 1943, a total of six sessions were held. Art historians also referred this period’s exhibitions and previous Taiwan exhibitions as "Taiwan Exhibitions" or "Bay Exhibitions" because the items and exhibited artists of the exhibitions are similar. It was considered a complete period due to the transfer from Taiwan Education Association to the Bureau of Culture and Education of the Governor General of Taiwan.
